You've Got to Keep Up With Home Maintenance and Repair
By: Ezra Plank
There are several reasons why you need to keep your home in good condition.
- It's where you live. You don't want to have to look at unsightly damage every day.
- You don't want to live with appliances and fixtures that aren't working properly, either.
- If one thing is broken, it can cause damage to other things.
- And if you want to sell your house, you'll get a much better price if it's in good condition.
Many times, if you don't get something fixed promptly, the results can be quite serious. With gas appliances, for example, there is a danger of fire or explosion. This is a case where you don't want to do it yourself. You should have your gas appliances inspected by a professional repairman on a regular basis. It's better to nip any possible problems in the bud.
In fact, most major appliances should have repairs performed by an experienced appliance repairman. Don't try do-it-yourself appliance repair, unless you really know what you're doing. You could make the situation worse, and end up spending a lot of money to get it straightened out. You can do certain routine checks yourself, though, such as checking for faulty fuses and thermostats.
There are lots of maintenance jobs that you can undertake that don't involve gas, electricity, or moving parts. Kitchen cabinets can deteriorate with age, and are a highly visible item that you want to keep looking good. When it's time to sell your house, potential buyers always look at the cabinets. You could get them all replaced before putting your home on the market, but they're costly items.
Regular and thorough cleaning can add years of life to both kitchen and bathroom cabinets. In the kitchen, grease can accumulate, which is easy to remove if you don't wait until it's a real mess. Sometimes it's best to completely dismantle the cabinets, so that the joints and hinges can be cleaned properly.
Regular home maintenance and repair, both by you as the homeowner, and by licensed home repair contractors, is just something that you have to keep up with, or you will surely experience the consequences of ignoring it.
